The civil marriage is recorded in Ököritó on March 29, 1902. Sándor emmigrated to the United States, his arrival is recorded on March 21, 1905 on board of the ship Ultonia.

Mózses got married to Éva Juhász on January 6, 1851 in Porcsalma. Their ages or parents' names were not recorded, the only information is that they were both born in Porcsalma.

According to the available data, two branches of the Ványi families can be distinguished.

One of them is the Pest County branch, the other is the Szabolcs-Szatmár branch. The Pest County branch starts with the settlers of Vány. They got their name based on their place of residence. Because of the Ottoman occupation they had to leave their village and they founded the Ványi families in the neighbouring places.

In the Szabolcs branch first we met Ványis in Földes, although they later prooved that Sándor, ban of Szörény had been their ancestor. We know that the Szatmár branch separated from the family in Földes, but maybe the families in Balkány, Érmihályfalva or even in Buj are also originated there.

The figure below summarizes the larger families and ther evolution. Timelines representing families are connected only when data is available showing the origins of the given family. Lajos was born was born on 6 November, 1875 in Cegléd as son of Károly (Charly) Ványi and Mária Klement. We don't know much about his childhood and early life. He got married in 1901 to Mária (Mary) Reggel who was born in 1882. Their daughter and first child Ilona (later known as Helen) was born on 11 April, 1902.

= First time in the US (1902-1913) =

The family left Hungary in November, 1902. They traveled from Hamburg to New York on the board of Pretoria, and they arrived on 15 November, 1902. They settled in Portland, Oregon, where their first sons were born: Louis on 14 March, 1905 and Emil on 19 January, 1907. The family resided in 752 East 13 St. Portland, Oregon, and Lajos worked as miller. He was naturalized on 18 November, 1911 at the Multinomah County Court.

= In Hungary (1913-1915) =
The family returned to Hungary in September 1913.
Back in Hungary the third son, Ladislaus was born on 20 April, 1914. We don't know why they returned to Hungary, but Lajos applied for an US Passport in May 1914 with the intent of returning to the United States within 2 years. He indeed return, arriving on 30 September, 1915, nevertheless his family stayed in Hungary.

= Back in the US =
Louis was drafted, his drafting card was issued on 18 February, 1918. In 1919 he applied for a passport, with the intent of going to Hungary and bringing his family back to the United States. In his application he states the following:

He also states that he already had a previous application which has not been granted.

We don't know the details yet, but at the end the family reunited. They arrived in November 1930 to New York, Louis and his wife Mary, and with them their children Helen (28), Emil (23), Louis (16). From this record, it looks like that their oldest son, Louis died in Hungary. Furthermore, Ladislaus is not in the list, but there is Louis, who was also born around 1914. In fact, from later records we know that Louis was born on 28 April 1914, thus, if the records are complete and correct, he is identical to Ladislaus.

Lajos died in 1944 in Portland, 6 years after Mária.

We have the following information from the vital records in Cegléd:
* Lajos was born on 6 November, 1875, his father was Károly Ványi, his mother was Mária Klement (in the record it can also be read as Klemens).
* Mária was born in 1883
* Lajos and Mária married on 11 May, 1901. Lajos was miller, his parents are Károly Ványi and Klément Mária. Mária's parents are the late Sámuel Reggel farmer and Lídia Bátori. The witnesses are János Egri taylor and János Andrási mason.
* Lajos' father, Károly was born in 1844, his parents were János Ványi and Judit Tar. His godparents were Pál Dömsödi and Susánna Kovács.

* Károly Ványi (22, single, parents János Ványi and the late Judit Tar) married Mária Klement (18, single, parents Sámuel Klement and Erzsébet Deső) on 28 January, 1866. Witnesses are András Rab and István Szűcs.

At the moment we have not much information on István, father of János Ványi, because there were several people in Cegléd called István Ványi, and at least two of them had a son, called János. One of them was the husband of Judit Dér, the other was the husband of Erzsébet Pákozdi. Judit's son was born in 1811, Erzsébet's son was born in 1815. The former was 22, the latter was 18 in 1833. Thus Judit's son seems to be more probable, but we need further research. As we only processed the data after the year 1800, it is possible, that János was born earlier.

The 3rd son of Lajos Vanyi was Lajos Vanyi, my father, born April 28, 1914 in Cegled. My Grandfather and Grandmother came to the U.S. through Ellis Island the first time in 1902 with their first born Helen.They lost a daughter Margaret and twin girls during their pursuit to homestead land in Oklahoma. They moved West to Portland, Oregon and a son, Louis II was born. Soon after, Emil was born. After an accident at the Mill, Grandfather lost his job with a meager financial settlement and locked up their home in Portland and returned to Hungary. Louis II got sick and died soon after their arrival in Hungary and is buried there. My father Louis was born on April 28, 1914 and named after his deceased brother. Being an American citizen, Grandfather returned to U.S. being advised by the American Consulate to leave Hungary due to war, but couldn't take the family back. This left the family in despair. Several years passed (5) and after severe hardship, he was notified by Red Cross to return to Hungary where he found them destitute and starving. After the war ended, Grandfather was found by the Red Cross and returned for his family. About 1925, he bought a farm and raised wheat, corn and grapes. He set up a barley and grain grinding business on the farm and moved the business to a junction connecting Cegled with Budapest. Emil was working as an apprentice painter in Budapest and returned home to help with the Mill business. He was inspirational in persuading the family to return to America and sent letters to Henry Ford for work. My Father was 16 Years years old when they all returned to the U.S. In 1930. They established a home in Portland, Oregon the remaining years of their lives. Emil and Dorothy had two sons, Ruben and Lawrence. Lajos (Louis) went to Hawaii after being denied traveling to China to do missionary work. He married my Mother, Mildred, and they had two children, Sylvia and Harvey. The family moved to California in 1949 and established residency in Ventura County. Louis retired with the U.S. Navy Missile Range Pt. Mugu 1967. He was the recipient of several gov't patents related to the first space program. In his retirement, he became a potter and designed hundreds of beautiful pottery which we are now the recipients of. He raised many species of orchids until his death in May 1990. Mildred also retired from owning her own business and was active with her Hawaiian music until her death in 2012. This info was taken from a book my Dad had started writing and I only added highlights of his notes. There was more detail to their life in Hungary and Portland too long to share.

In later documents it appears that the debt was payed off by the city to István Ványi's daughter part in cash, part in meat from the slaughterhouse of the city; a part of it was let off by Mihályné Széll due to good memories.

István Ványi's lineage ended, but around 1800 some Ványis from the parallel lineage appeared and acquired the nobility letter from Mihály Nyári then vogt (mayor) for one Kremnica ducat guarding fee; the county, however, learned that they are not from the direct lineage and it ended up in a big nobility trial that was lost by the Ványis. The old newspaper lady was the descendant of these Vanyis, who were suing for their nobility.

The family left Hungary in November, 1902. They traveled from Hamburg to New York on the ship called Pretoria, and they arrived on 15 November, 1902. They settled in Portland, Oregon, where their first son, Emil was born. Lajos, now using the name Louis, received the US citizenship on 18 November, 1911 at the Multinomah County Court. His drafting card was issued on 18 February, 1918. The family returned to Hungary for a short period, and their youngest son, Louis was born there. However, after the war they moved back to the US permanently.

Lajos died in 1944 in Portland, 6 years after Mária.

At the moment we have not much information on István, father of János Ványi, because there were several people in Cegléd called István Ványi, and at least two of them had a son, called János. Thus Judit's son seems to be more probable, but we need further research. As we only processed the data after the year 1800, it is possible, that János was born earlier.

It might have been an inhabited settlement earlier that has been destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The resettling occured after 1359 but the village has been destroyed again during the Ottoman campaign around 1541 never to build up again. Inhabitants fled to the neighbouring villages. The name survived in the name of two places, Alsóvány (lower Vány) and Felsővány (upper Vány).

= Brief history =

We can follow the history of the family in two threads, between which no connection has been found yet. One of the threads starts with [[Mihály, falconer of the king]], Egyed, son of Tamás and further [[settlers of Vány]]. Their descendants moved to other villages during the Ottoman wars, and founded the Ványi families in Veresegyház, Vác and other places in and around Pest county. We know that some of them moved to Nagykőrös, and they might be the ancestors of the [[Ványi family in Cegléd]] as well. Unfortunately, we have no furher information on the history of this branch. However, it is important to know that Leopold I. donated nobility title and a [[Ványi family coat of arms|family coat of arms]] to [[István Ványi]] in Nagykőrös.

The first person on the other branch is [[Sándor, bán of Szörény]], faithful servant of Stephen, junior king of Hungary. He received several donations, [[donation letter, 1268|one of those]] has been later reaffirmed by Andrew III and Louis the Great. We have no detailed information on his descendants, but in 1741 [[János Ványi]] residing in Földes proved that Sándor was his ancestor and also presented the document issued by Louis the Great to Szabolcs County. We have more information on János's family, he is the ancestor of the [[Földes Ványi family]], whereas his unlce, [[Mihály Ványi|Mihály]] is the founder of the [[Szatmár Ványi family]].

Separately, one can also mention the immigrants. We have detailed information on [[Lajos Ványi]], who moved from Cegléd to Oregon and [[John Vanyi]], who moved from Porcsalma to Michigan.

It might have been an inhabited settlement earlier that has been destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The resettling occured after 1359 but the village has been destroyed again during the Ottoman campaign around 1541 never to build up again. Inhabitants fled to the neighbouring villages. The name survived in the name of two places, Alsóvány (lower Vány) and Felsővány (upper Vány).

We can follow the history of the family in two threads, between which no connection has been found yet. One of the threads starts with [[Mihály, falconer of the king]], Egyed, son of Tamás and further [[settlers of Vány]]. Their descendants moved to other villages during the Ottoman wars, and founded the Ványi families in Veresegyház, Vác and other places in and around Pest county. We know that some of them moved to Nagykőrös, and they might be the ancestors of the [[Ványi family in Cegléd]] as well. Unfortunately, we have no furher information on the history of this branch. However, it is important to know that Leopold I. donated nobility title and a [[Ványi family coat of arms|family coat of arms]] to [[István Ványi]] in Nagykőrös.

The first person on the other branch is [[Sándor, bán of Szörény]], faithful servant of Stephen, junior king of Hungary. He received several donations, [[donation letter, 1268|one of those]] has been later reaffirmed by Andrew III and Louis the Great. We have no detailed information on his descendants, but in 1741 [[János Ványi]] residing in Földes proved that Sándor was his ancestor and also presented the document issued by Louis the Great to Szabolcs County. We have more information on János's family, he is the ancestor of the [[Földes Ványi family]], whereas his unlce, [[Mihály Ványi|Mihály]] is the founder of the [[Szatmár Ványi family]].

Separately, one can also mention the immigrants. The only person we have detailed information on is [[Lajos Ványi]], who moved from Cegléd to Oregon. His descendants still live on the pacific coast of the USA.

'''Lajos Ványi''' (<small>pronunciation:</small>{{convertIPA|’|l|a|j|o|s|-|’|v|á|ny|i}}) was born on 6 November, 1875 in Cegléd. His wife, Mária (Mary) Reggel was born in 1882. They got married in 1901, and their daughter Ilona (later known as Helen) was born on 11 April, 1902.

The family left Hungary in November, 1902. They traveled from Hamburg to New York on the ship called Pretoria, and they arrived on 15 November, 1902. They settled in Portland, Oregon, where their first son, Emil was born. Lajos, now using the name Louis, received the US citizenship on 18 November, 1911 at the Multinomah County Court. His drafting card was issued on 18 February, 1918. The family returned to Hungary for a short period, and their youngest son, Louis was born there. However, after the war they moved back to the US permanently.

Lajos died in 1944 in Portland, 6 years after Mária.

* Lajos was born on 6 November, 1875, his father was Károly Ványi, his mother was Mária Klement (in the record it can also be read as Klemens).
* Mária was born in 1883
* Lajos and Mária married on 11 May, 1901. Lajos was miller, his parents are Károly Ványi and Klément Mária. Mária's parents are the late Sámuel Reggel farmer and Lídia Bátori. The witnesses are János Egri taylor and János Andrási mason.
* Lajos' father, Károly was born in 1844, his parents were János Ványi and Judit Tar. His godparents were Pál Dömsödi and Susánna Kovács.

* Károly Ványi (22, single, parents János Ványi and the late Judit Tar) married Mária Klement (18, single, parents Sámuel Klement and Erzsébet Deső) on 28 January, 1866. Witnesses are András Rab and István Szűcs.
* János Ványi and Judit Tar married on 10 December, 1833. János' father was the late István Ványi, Judit's father was János Tar.

At the moment we have not much information on István, father of János Ványi, because there were several people in Cegléd called István Ványi, and at least two of them had a son, called János. One of them was the husband of Judit Dér, the other was the husband of Erzsébet Pákozdi. Judit's son was born in 1811, Erzsébet's son was born in 1815. The former was 22, the latter was 18 in 1833. Thus Judit's son seems to be more probable, but we need further research. As we only processed the data after the year 1800, it is possible, that János was born earlier.

The family name '''Ványi''' (<small>pronunciation:</small>{{convertIPA|’|v|á|ny|i}}) cannot be found among the most common Hungarian family names. According to the 2004 survey it is not in the top 100, that is in Hugary there are less than 10,000 people with this name.<ref name=KEKKH>

</ref> In spite of this fact, one can find Ványis almost in the whole country, and sometimes even beyond the borders of Hungary.

It would be improvident to assume that it is one single family according the law. But is might be not that wrong to speak about the Ványi family in general, should we consider people living in [[Földes]], [[Veresegyház]], [[Cegléd]] or even in California.

The aim of this page is to collect as much information on Ványis living all over the world as possible and to present the history of the family in an organized manner with ancestry tables and family connections.

= The origin of the name =
As common in Hungary, the name is based on a locality name. In Hugarian an 'i' at the end means 'from', that is ványi means from Vány. The settlement [[Vány]] could be found to the south of Pest and to the north of Bugyi, that time not far from the border of counties Pest and Fejér. The first written reference is from 1277, when it is described as deserted place.<ref name=Wenzel>

It might have been an inhabited settlement earlier that has been destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The resettling occured after 1359 but the village has been destroyed again during the Ottoman campaign around 1541 never to build up again. Inhabitants fled to the neighbouring villages. The name survived in the name of two places, Alsóvány (lower Vány) and Felsővány (upper Vány).

= Brief history =

We can follow the history of the family in two threads, between which no connection has been found yet. One of the threads starts with [[Mihály, falconer of the king]], Egyed, son of Tamás and further [[settlers of Vány]]. Their descendants moved to other villages during the Ottoman wars, and founded the Ványi families in Veresegyház, Vác and other places in and around Pest county. We know that some of them moved to Nagykőrös, and they might be the ancestors of the [[Ványi family in Cegléd]] as well. Unfortunately, we have no furher information on the history of this branch. However, it is important to know that Leopold I. donated nobility title and a [[Ványi family coat of arms|family coat of arms]] to [[István Ványi]] in Nagykőrös.

The first person on the other branch is [[Sándor, bán of Szörény]], faithful servant of Stephen, junior king of Hungary. He received several donations, [[donation letter, 1268|one of those]] has been later reaffirmed by Andrew III and Louis the Great. We have no detailed information on his descendants, but in 1741 [[János Ványi]] residing in Földes proved that Sándor was his ancestor and also presented the document issued by Louis the Great to Szabolcs County. We have more information on János's family, he is the ancestor of the [[Földes Ványi family]], whereas his unlce, [[Mihály Ványi|Mihály]] is the founder of the [[Szatmár Ványi family]].

Separately, one can also mention the emmigrants. The only person we have detailed information on is [[Lajos Ványi]], who moved from Cegléd to Oregon. His descendants still live on the pacific coast of the USA.

Lajos Ványi was born on 6 November, 1875 in Cegléd. His wife, Mária (Mary) Reggel was born in 1882. They got married in 1901, and their daughter Ilona (later known as Helen) was born on 11 April, 1902.

The family left Hungary in November, 1902. They traveled from Hamburg to New York on the ship called Pretoria, and they arrived on 15 November, 1902. They settled in Portland, Oregon, where their first son, Emil was born. Lajos, now using the name Louis, received the US citizenship on 18 November, 1911 at the Multinomah County Court. His drafting card was issued on 18 February, 1918. The family returned to Hungary for a short period, and their youngest son, Louis was born there. However, after the war they moved back to the US permanently.

Lajos died in 1944 in Portland, 6 years after Mária.

We have the following information from the vital records in Cegléd:
* Lajos was born on 6 November, 1875, his father was Károly Ványi, his mother was Mária Klement (in the record it can also be read as Klemens).
* Mária was born in 1883
* Lajos and Mária married on 11 May, 1901. Lajos was miller, his parents are Károly Ványi and Klément Mária. Mária's parents are the late Sámuel Reggel farmer and Lídia Bátori. The witnesses are János Egri taylor and János Andrási mason.
* Lajos' father, Károly was born in 1844, his parents were János Ványi and Judit Tar. His godparents were Pál Dömsödi and Susánna Kovács.

* Károly Ványi (22, single, parents János Ványi and the late Judit Tar) married Mária Klement (18, single, parents Sámuel Klement and Erzsébet Deső) on 28 January, 1866. Witnesses are András Rab and István Szűcs.
* János Ványi and Judit Tar married on 10 December, 1833. János' father was the late István Ványi, Judit's father was János Tar.

At the moment we have not much information on István, father of János Ványi, because there were several people in Cegléd called István Ványi, and at least two of them had a son, called János. One of them was the husband of Judit Dér, the other was the husband of Erzsébet Pákozdi. Judit's son was born in 1811, Erzsébet's son was born in 1815. The former was 22, the latter was 18 in 1833. Thus Judit's son seems to be more probable, but we need further research. As we only processed the data after the year 1800, it is possible, that János was born earlier.

The family left Hungary in November, 1902. They traveled from Hamburg to New York on the ship called Pretoria, and they arrived on 15 November, 1902. They settled in Portland, Oregon, where their first son, Emil was born. Lajos, now using the name Louis, received the US citizenship on 18 November, 1911 at the Multinomah County Court. His drafting card was issued on 18 February, 1918. The family returned to Hungary for a short period, and their youngest son, Louis was born there. However, after the war they moved back to the US permanently.

* Lajos' father, Károly was born in 1844, his parents were János Ványi and Judit Tar. His godparents were Pál Dömsödi and Susánna Kovács.
* Károly Ványi (22, single, parents János Ványi and the late Judit Tar) married Mária Klement (18, single, parents Sámuel Klement and Erzsébet Deső) on 28 January, 1866. Witnesses are András Rab and István Szűcs.
* János Ványi and Judit Tar married on 10 December, 1833. János' father was the late István Ványi, Judit's father was János Tar.

At the moment we have not much information on István, father of János Ványi, because there were several people in Cegléd called István Ványi, and at least two of them had a son, called János. One of them was the husband of Judit Dér, the other was the husband of Erzsébet Pákozdi. Judit's son was born in 1811, Erzsébet's son was born in 1815. The former was 22, the latter was 18 in 1833. Thus Judit's son seems to be more probable, but we need further research. As we only processed the data after the year 1800, it is possible, that János was born earlier.

The family name Ványi cannot be found among the most common Hungarian family names. According to the 2004 survey it is not in the top 100, that is in Hugary there are less than 10,000 people with this name.<ref name=KEKKH>

</ref> In spite of this fact, one can find Ványis almost in the whole country, and sometimes even beyond the borders of Hungary.

It would be improvident to assume that it is one single family according the law. But is might be not that wrong to speak about the Ványi family in general, should we consider people living in [[Földes]], [[Veresegyház]], [[Cegléd]] or even in California.

The aim of this page is to collect as much information on Ványis living all over the world as possible and to present the history of the family in an organized manner with ancestry tables and family connections.

= The origin of the name =
As common in Hungary, the name is based on a locality name. In Hugarian an 'i' at the end means 'from', that is ványi means from Vány. The settlement [[Vány]] could be found to the south of Pest and to the north of Bugyi, that time not far from the border of counties Pest and Fejér. The first written reference is from 1277, when it is described as deserted place.<ref name=Wenzel>

It might have been an inhabited settlement earlier that has been destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The resettling occured after 1359 but the village has been destroyed again during the Ottoman campaign around 1541 never to build up again. Inhabitants fled to the neighbouring villages. The name survived in the name of two places, Alsóvány (lower Vány) and Felsővány (upper Vány).

= Brief history =

We can follow the history of the family in two threads, between which no connection has been found yet. One of the threads starts with [[Mihály, falconer of the king]], Egyed, son of Tamás and further [[settlers of Vány]]. Their descendants moved to other villages during the Ottoman wars, and founded the Ványi families in Veresegyház, Vác and other places in and around Pest county. We know that some of them moved to Nagykőrös, and they might be the ancestors of the [[Ványi family in Cegléd]] as well. Unfortunately, we have no furher information on the history of this branch. However, it is important to know that Leopold I. donated nobility title and a [[Ványi family coat of arms|family coat of arms]] to [[István Ványi]] in Nagykőrös.

The first person on the other branch is [[Sándor, bán of Szörény]], faithful servant of Stephen, junior king of Hungary. He received several donations, [[donation letter, 1268|one of those]] has been later reaffirmed by Andrew III and Louis the Great. We have no detailed information on his descendants, but in 1741 [[János Ványi]] residing in Földes proved that Sándor was his ancestor and also presented the document issued by Louis the Great to Szabolcs County. We have more information on János's family, he is the ancestor of the [[Földes Ványi family]], whereas his unlce, [[Mihály Ványi|Mihály]] is the founder of the [[Szatmár Ványi family]].

Separately, one can also mention the emmigrants. The only person we have detailed information on is [[Lajos Ványi]], who moved from Cegléd to Oregon. His descendants still live on the pacific coast of the USA.

According to certain records the Ványi family moved to Nagykőrös after Bugyi has been destroyed. The best known member of the family is [[István Ványi]], who received a nobility title in 1690. The first well known member of the family is István Ványi, who received a nobility title and coat of arms from Leopold I. in '''1690'''. This has been announced on November 13 at the assembly of Pest-Pilis-Solt County. The donation has been awarded to István, his wife Erzsébet Danóczy, their children Gergely and Sára furthermore to his brother János and his wife Anna Bende. The original document was kept in the county archives under registration number 30/1265, and the copy was in the nobility documents group under registration number V.19. According to the Illésy collection the donation includes two more family members: Gergely, brother of István and János, furthermore János, son of János and Anna.

VÁNYI Ferenc, dr. (Nagykőrös, 1887. jan 14. – Budapest, 1966. mar 15.)
Teacher, editor. Received a degree as teacher of history and geography at the University of Kolozsvár (1919). He started to teach in Nagykőrös, then he moved to Szentendre (1910-1911). He was relocated to Budapest, first as teacher at the Baár-Madas lyceum until 1936, later as director until nationalization (1943-1950).
